Bell Buoy Beach House

Sited in a windswept coastal dune looking out across Bass Straight, this costal home hunkers down to withstand the elements. Surrounded by a striking coastal landscape with sweeping views from Low Head to Five Mile Bluff this family home is designed to shelter from wild weather and to connect its inhabitants to the natural environment from every room.

The home’s northerly orientation, axis of views and the predominant weather patterns allow an optimal passive solar design open to a northerly aspect with wide eaves, sheltering roofs, good thermal mass, natural ventilation and natural materials. Energy efficient windows strategically placed allow for an abundance of natural light and cross ventilation during hot summers while internal rammed earthen walls and tiled concrete floors provide thermal mass for comfortable living in all seasons.

A wood fired heater in the sunken lounge room is placed against an earthen wall to provide ambience and added radiant warmth in the winter months.

External materials have been chosen with low embodied energy and to withstand sand, storms and bushfires. Rainwater is harvested for domestic use.

The Interior features timeless materials: natural timbers, earth, sisal and tiles with non toxic finishes to create a very casual and healthy beach house.

We wish this lovely family a long and happy life in this coastal home - may every day feel like a holiday on the beach!
