Rammed Earth House Ferntree Tasmania

This modest and beautifully crafted rammed earth home is nestled among the gum trees on the slopes of kunanyi / Mt Wellington in Hobart, Tasmania. Designed to capture the suns warmth in winter and the views to the mountain top it is build on a small footprint with natural materials to blend into the bush setting and to resist a bushfire.

To protect the natural bush environment, the clearing is minimal and the construction resilient. The family home is a Passive Solar Design capturing maximum solar gain in winter, providing generous shade in summer, natural ventilation and a thermally efficient shell. The well insulated building envelope features extra thick, double skin earthen walls with thermal mass for interior comfort all year round and bushfire rated timber windows with double glazing. Beautifully detailed and crafted in natural materials the interior provides a healthy and calm living environment with minimal finishes. Every room provides connections to the stunning bush environment.

The design responds to our local Tasmanian climate whilst protecting our natural environment and providing a resilient, natural and comfortable retreat for its inhabitants all year round.
